Converting in the Metric System

So as we learned last night and discussed today, pretty much everyone in the world uses the Metric System. Tonight we will practice working with the Metric System and converting within.

Metric System Blog Homework!

Hey everyone! If you are reading this, you have just started tonight's online homework! Your homework for tonight is to be on the blog and complete the tasks outlined in this post.

We're starting to work on the Metric System in class. Please follow the directions below to be prepared for class tomorrow!

Please watch this video from Bill Nye:

Google image search: "Metric System"  Please write down what you learn from the images on paper (quick version, 30 words or less) or print out an image (just one) that you think is most helpful. If you want to share it on instagram, please hashtag it #misskmetric

Research: How many countries DON'T use the Metric System? Bonus: What are they?

Think about it:  What are the benefits of the Metric System?

Be ready to talk about it: Do you think we should switch to the Metric System? Why or why not?

Size Comparison: Find approximate sizes of the base units in the Metric System. About how long is a meter? How heavy is a gram? How much is a liter?

Optional, Metric system film from 1975 (this will help you with the questions above):

From class today (nothing to do with this this evening!)

Solving conversions with proportions!

Tonight's homework has you using the conversion factors we found yesterday to solve various conversions using proportions tonight. We practiced writing proportions using what we know (the equivalencies) to figure out what we need to know (the questions). Take a look at the examples below and then use them to solve the rest of the problems on the homework sheet which is also below. I've included the equivalencies below.

Finding Conversion Factors

So BYOD *kinda* worked today. Please finish both sides of the conversions worksheet tonight if you didn't finish in class. Remember, use the internet, almanacs, printed resources, etc to finish it. If you really get stuck on one, please skip it. Don't spend more than about 15-20 minutes on this assignment!

Remember the golf balls have more than one answer, sorry, I thought it was a standard amount from my research. Yards in a bolt should be the largest average amount you find.

Conversion sheets with reminders:

Thanks for your hard work despite technology glitches! We'll use this information in class tomorrow for our activity!

Writing Proportions

We spent most of today writing solvable proportions and decorating them!  Just wait, they will show up again!

The only thing you really need to worry about this weekend is bringing in a device on Monday if you have one that you are allowed to bring in!  Enjoy your weekend!

Proportion Practice Please!

We created and solved proportions in class today!  Here are some examples from in class and then the rest of tonight's homework (#'s 5-9)  We'll continue to go over writing and solving proportions again tomorrow, so if it's kinda difficult, don't stress, try the problem and we'll go over it tomorrow!

Do your best!  See you tomorrow!

Solving Proportions

We began solving proportions today in class. Our skills from working with ratios and equivalent fractions were really helpful as we explored various techniques for solving proportions.

This video explained a bit about cross multiplying which will also help you with the concept of solving equations:

Notes from class:

Tonight's homework is to complete the EVENS on worksheet 10-5.

Fraction review

No homework, we just spent the day reviewing fractions, simplifying and finding equivalent fractions.

We have Camp Hazen tomorrow, so please remember to bring a bag lunch, no glass bottles and anything you think you might need for a day in the woods! We're going to have a blast, but be prepared for a little bit of rain if it happens!

See you tomorrow!!

Starting to use proportions

The shortest definition I can think of for a proportion is this:

Two equal fractions.

Some basics from Math.com and Mathisfun:

We spent today comparing fractions to see if they form equal proportions.  If they both simplify to the same value or you can change one number into the other, they are proportionate.  Here are some examples from class today:

Tonight's homework is to complete the EVENS on worksheet 10-4:

Have a great night!  Remember, if this is confusing, that's okay...  We just started and we're going to spend more time on it tomorrow!  Have a great night!  I'm free to help during 3rd period tomorrow if you need help!  I have a meeting 7th, but hopefully it won't last all period.  I'm not positive that I will be able to be on instagram much tonight, but try if you need!
