Test Today!

I will correct these by Friday!  Everyone seemed pretty enthusiastic about the Test, so I am hoping for some spectacular grades!  If you missed class today due to being absent, you will have a chance to make up the test either Thursday or Friday during class, just see me right at the start of class so that you can get started!

I have something special and fun planned for tomorrow and Friday.  Here's a hint:

Answers from today's review packet

Thanks to Red class for helping me fill in the answers!

-Miss K  :)

Happy Memorial Day weekend!

I know that you will be off having fun and enjoying the long weekend with nice weather, but if you can find a few minutes each day to study for your math test on Wednesday, you will really be doing yourself a favor.  After this test, we only have one more for the year.  If you have concerns about raising your grade, THIS is how you do it!  You are all capable of great, amazing things...  We saw that yesterday as you shared your accomplishments with your guests!  This is another opportunity to to demonstrate what you can do and how capable you are!  Take the time to empower yourself to be amazing!

That being said, this weekend's homework is to study for next week's test.  :)  You know what to do!

This morning was GREAT!

Thank you to all of Team 6-3 students and guests for making this morning so wonderful!  I am so proud and impressed with the work that you have done this year!  Thank you again for being just plain awesome!

Tonight's homework is to complete the new packet that I gave out today!  The Test will be Wednesday, but start the studying early to ensure that you do your best next week!

Seuss knows best!

-Miss K  :)

Blah, rainy Monday!

Tonight's homework is to complete the review sheet.  As a reminder (and first notice if you didn't hear in class or we didn't notice in time... Red Class) #18 has an extra zero at the end of the number.  The problem should read 5,000,300 NOT 5,000,3000.  Sorry about the confusion!  The test will be next Wednesday due to the crazy schedule.  Keep studying and working on the various reviews I give you.

Here's a little mathy comic to make you giggle...

Review Assignment

I had hoped to have the test on Friday of next week, but due to various scheduling issues, it will be Wednesday, May 30th instead.  Be sure to start reviewing Order of Operations, Exponents, Scientific Notation so you will be prepared.  Many of you have suggested or shared that you want to bring your grades up...  Remember, you are the only one that can do that!  Do your homework, ask questions, and practice when you study!

This weekend, you need to complete the review assignment that I handed out in class.  There is a lot on it and it can be a bit confusing, but I know that if you take your time and work carefully, you should be fine.  Feel free to use a calculator!

Quick reminders:

Need more help?  Look on the left hand column of the blog and find the "Tag Cloud."  Select the topic that you need help with and you will be taken to a version of the blog with posts on that topic.  For example, THIS is the rounding section.

Good Luck!  Work hard!  We will review on Monday!

Scientific Notation

(Don't worry about the negative numbers and exponents)

Use your class notes, the videos above and the problems you started in class to help you if you are having any trouble with tonight's homework!

Have a great evening!

Polson Visit and Preparing for Kids and Conversations

Today we were able to visit Walter C. Polson Middle School!  I hope that you enjoyed your tour and feel a bit more comfortable at the school you will attend next year.

Additionally, we were able to begin practicing for Kids and Conversation.  You all did a great job!  Remember to keep thinking about what you want to say next Thursday!

Reminders:

  • The math homework is due tomorrow.
  • The math challenge sheet is due tomorrow.
  • You must return your Kids and Conversation RSVP by Friday
  • The Lake Compounce permission slip and money are due by Friday.
Have a good afternoon!  Don't forget about those forms and the homework!

Even more Order of Operations (OoO)

But, now with Word Problems!!!!!!

Tonight's homework is to complete the word problem worksheet.  The "Blackbelt" paper is optional.

Good luck!  Remember this is due Thursday, but it would be a great idea to get it done tonight!

More OoO

Today we had out "Operation Central" play!  And we solved the big confusing math problem!

Tonight's homework is the OoO (Order of Operations) worksheet.  Most of you either finished or came really close to finishing your homework in class tonight, but here are examples from the paper...  Remember that a= 2, b=3, and c=4.

Good luck on the homework and have a nice day!

Allowance Problem

For those of you that are curious, I used excel to go to 25 weeks in the allowance problem...

Things I noticed:
  • Through 12 weeks, Option B is the better choice.
  • At week 13, Option A will have paid out more in total than Option B.
  • It will take 100 weeks to earn $1000 with Method B, but only 16 weeks with Method A.
  • By the time you earn $250 with Method B, you will have already raked in way more than a half million dollars with Option A and will earn over $300,000 in that week alone!
Did you notice any thing else that you found interesting?

-Miss K  :)

Order of Operations

Notes and examples from class:

And here are some of the homework problems that we did in class:

Tonight's homework is to complete JUST the 2-8 side of the worksheet.  You must do all 24 problems and MUST show your work on a separate piece of paper to receive credit for completing your homework.  Work slowly and carefully and I am sure you will do well.

More exponents!

Nice work on last night's homework!  I also appreciate the hard work that you put in today in class.  If you missed class or want a reminder, check out these screen shots from class:

Tonight's homework problem:  (or at least the start of it!)

You just need to finish the allowance problem for homework tonight!  Tomorrow we start Order of Operations!

Quizzes :(

Just got home from school and I have a meeting at 6:30 tonight.  I don't think that I am going to be able to finish grading the quizzes.  It takes a long time to grade them (especially with all those crazy fractions and trying to give partial credit where I can) and I have been working on the quizzes, but I'm not there yet.  They WILL be graded tomorrow evening and I will share the grades with you on Thursday!  Thanks in advance for your understanding!

-Miss K  :)

Exponents

Today we began working with exponents.

Some notes/examples from class:

Other things to help...

I've had trouble finding videos on the topic, but here's a cool one that I posted a few weeks ago that used exponents!

Do a little bit of research or logical thinking to figure out this picture.
What is any number to the zero power equal to?  Leave your answer in the comments!

Getting ready for the Student Led Conferences

Today we started working on our reflection sheets for the Student Led Conferences.  You filled out your answers on a net of a rectangular prism and cut it out to store in your class folder.  If you were absent, please create a rough draft of your reflection by using the template below.  You will fill out a final copy after I check over your spelling/answers/etc.

Tonight's homework is to give someone a compliment...  consider it extra credit in being a nice person!  :)

Math is Musical, Music is Mathical!

Another Vi Hart video...  each pattern corresponds to notes as they change.  Now I'm not musically literate, but this is amazing and beautiful!  Check it out!

Vi Hart's comment on the video:

A visual and musical expression of mathematical symmetry groups. The transformations done to the video are equivalent to the transformations done to the notes.

These type of repeating patterns are called frieze patterns. A couple wallpaper groups are also represented.
Enjoy!

May the 4th be with you!
