Primes, Composites, and Factorization

As you know, I was super impressed with your work today in class!  You have all done so well, participated, and "gotten" the new concepts!  I am so proud of you and all of your hard work!

Prime Number:  A number with 1 and itself as its only factors.

examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89, 97...

Composite Number:  A number with more factors than just 1 and itself.

examples:  4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 42, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, 70, 72, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, 99, 100...

Numbers of Note:  0 and 1 are neither prime nor composite.  0 is actually an interesting number, check out the wiki link!  By the way, 0 IS an even number!  1 cannot be prime because it only has one factor, 1, and by definition, primes have two factors.  1 is its own factorial, meaning that it can be multiplied by itself as many times as you want and will always equal itself.  Check out the wiki page!



We also learned how to do the prime factorization of a number.



Tonight's homework is to complete the Prime, Composite, and Factorization worksheet.  Remember that we have a graded class assignment tomorrow!
