Happy Anniversary!

Finally Friday!

As you know, we have our Number Theory Quiz on Tuesday.  The study guide is due on Monday, so be sure to spend a little bit of time on that each day.  The quiz will be the last grade of the first trimester, so please be sure to do your best.  If you want to improve your average, this is the time to do it.  If you are already happy with your average, make sure that this grade won't bring you down at all!

SUMO Paint

So, our resident creative genius, Connor B., found yet another really cool thing!  When I was checking out his blog, I saw that he was using a paint program called "SUMO paint."

Short story:  It's awesome go play.

Long story:  This paint program seems to be available for free online and has tons of really neat painting, stamping, drawing tools, and coloring tools.  I really like the symmetry tool and how you can spin the different shapes that you make.  Click on the toggle that allows you to have "shape trails" when you work with it.  I really liked that effect.  I am sure that Connor might be able to tell you a bit more.

Primes, Composites, and Factorization

As you know, I was super impressed with your work today in class!  You have all done so well, participated, and "gotten" the new concepts!  I am so proud of you and all of your hard work!

Prime Number:  A number with 1 and itself as its only factors.

examples: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23, 29, 31, 37, 41, 43, 47, 53, 59, 61, 67, 71, 73, 79, 83, 89, 97...

Composite Number:  A number with more factors than just 1 and itself.

examples:  4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 14, 15, 16, 18, 20, 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 30, 32, 33, 34, 35, 36, 38, 39, 40, 42, 44, 45, 46, 48, 49, 50, 51, 52, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 60, 62, 63, 64, 65, 66, 68, 69, 70, 72, 74, 75, 76, 77, 78, 80, 81, 82, 84, 85, 86, 87, 88, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 98, 99, 100...

Numbers of Note:  0 and 1 are neither prime nor composite.  0 is actually an interesting number, check out the wiki link!  By the way, 0 IS an even number!  1 cannot be prime because it only has one factor, 1, and by definition, primes have two factors.  1 is its own factorial, meaning that it can be multiplied by itself as many times as you want and will always equal itself.  Check out the wiki page!



We also learned how to do the prime factorization of a number.



Tonight's homework is to complete the Prime, Composite, and Factorization worksheet.  Remember that we have a graded class assignment tomorrow!

Divisibility Rules

What a busy day, between the talent show and Mix-it-up day, it was pretty crazy!  Congrats to those of you that performed in the talent show.  What I saw was spectacular and I heard that the parts I missed were wonderful too!  If you made a new friend today at mix-it-up lunch, good for you.  If you kinda cheated the system and just sat with the same friends you sit with each day, you really missed out on an opportunity.  Hopefully you will choose to participate in the future...

Now onto class...  So instead of the pre-test that I had initially planned on giving you today, I decided to move onto the divisibility rules.  Here are the rules just in case you need a reminder.

Divisibility Rules




A number is divisible by 2 if it is even, ends in 2, 4, 6, 8 or 0

A number is divisible by 3 if the sum of its digits can be divided by 3

A number is divisible by 5 if the value ends with 5 or 0

A number is divisible by 6 if it is divisible by both 2 and 3

A number is divisible by 9 if the sum of its digits can be divided by 9

A number is divisible by 10 if the value ends with 0

90 Minute delay!

I loved the delay, but honestly, it messed up our schedule big time!!!  In class today, we finished our math tests and didn't have time to start our pre-tests.  Tomorrow we will work on the pre-tests and get started on our next chapter.  No Homework tonight!  Enjoy!

Carl Sagan Day!

I just saw that today is Carl Sagan day!  Check out the official Carl Sagan Day Page!  I remember doing a book report project on him when I was in 6th grade at Brown school.  My father helped me with the project because he was a big admirer of Sagan, and ever since, Carl Sagan has reminded me of my father.


Sagan was an astronomer and somewhat of a philosopher.  He is probably most known for his PBS series and book, COSMOS.  Take a look at the video below, "Pale Blue Dot."



I know that you might be tempted to not watch, to ignore or to only watch a little bit of that video, but, I suggest that you take the three minutes and thirty-one seconds to watch the whole video and then take a little bit more time to think about what he said:

Solving decimal equations... multiplication and division

I know that we have a lot to do for homework, but I checked with the other teachers and I know that you don't have much homework in your other classes.  If you began working on the Study Guide already, you should be absolutely fine with the homework.  Remember, we don't have school tomorrow, so everything is due on Wednesday.

1.  Complete the classwork if you didn't finish it.  (you don't have to show checks on #'s 8, 10, and 11)
2.  Complete the solving equations worksheet.
3.  Complete the study guide.

Feel free to use a multiplication chart, like the one below to help you!


Please work diligently and show your work.  I believe that the HW will go faster than you think if you work carefully.  Best of luck and check out this video to help you study for the Test on Thursday!
